“Understand the material first, then use your hands: the history and science of clay come before the wheel — knowing what a glaze is made of changes how you see ceramics.”

Elizaveta Barsega’s education was a journey: more than ten years of ethnographic material and ceramics research with master potters in Morocco and the Rif Mountains, in Northern Thailand and Georgia. In her studio and gallery in Friedrichshain this has become a practice rare in Berlin — bespoke glazes from local minerals, wood ash and lava sands — and a pedagogy that starts teaching with the history of the material, not with technique.
