Sewing classes and textile crafts in Berlin

A sewing class in Berlin is often the beginning of something bigger: once you have hemmed your own skirt, you see clothing differently — seams, fabrics and cuts stop being self-evident. Textile craft is the most accessible of the classic trades: the machine is waiting in the studio, the fabric costs little, and the difference between frustration and skill lies almost entirely in the quality of the teaching.

What makes a good textile course

»Textiles« gathers very different crafts under one word: machine sewing, pattern construction, weaving on a frame or a loom, knitting, embroidery and screen printing on fabric. For getting started one thing matters most: a teacher who sits down next to you when the bobbin thread snaps for the fourth time. Look for small groups with one machine per person, for a clear course project — a bag, a cushion cover, a garment — and for clarity about whether material is included in the price or you bring your own fabric. Studios that state both openly usually mean the rest honestly too. Many of Berlin’s textile studios teach in English as well; every listing’s spec sheet shows the course languages.

How we choose

Every studio on this page has been visited, its prices, group sizes and equipment have been checked, and each one carries an honest verdict from the curator. Sewing cafés without real instruction and craft-kit formats where everyone ends up holding the same little pouch are not listed. The criteria we decide by are laid out openly in How we curate.

Who it’s for

For everyone who doesn’t want to merely consume clothing and fabric. A weaving workshop slows you down more thoroughly than any app, a screen printing weekend turns an idea into a small edition, and whoever learns to sew suddenly repairs things that would have gone in the bin before. If you already sew, pattern construction is the step from copying to designing — the difference between a recipe and cooking. And here too: most studios issue vouchers — a class is a better gift than a third scarf.
